How to add an order bump

Offer a small add-on on the checkout: a box the buyer ticks before paying. Create the bump product, attach it and check it live.

What you'll build

An order bump, a one-click add-on, on the demo brand's checkout: a 14-sachet travel pack of Vitality Complex for $17, shown as a tick box under the order summary. When the buyer ticks it, the total goes from $97.00 to $114.00 and the pack is paid in the same payment as the main order.

New to order bumps? Read the full guide first: what an upsell is, and how it differs from an order bump, a downsell and a cross-sell.

You need a checkout page in ElasticFunnels (a page marked Is checkout page, with a spot for the bump: the demo checkout has one under the order summary) and a main product it sells. The bump is added with a page event on that checkout, so nothing on the page design changes.

1Create the bump product

Go to Settings › Products and click Create product. Enter a Title and a Code, set Classification to Bump, fill in the Price (the Retail Price, the regular price, is optional) and click Create product.

Create product: the title Vitality Travel Pack 14 sachets, the code nw-travel-pack, Classification set to Bump, price 17 and retail price 29; the new product appears at the top of the list
The classification is what makes a product a bump: only products classified as Bump can be picked for the checkout.

2Open the checkout's Page Events

In Pages, search for your checkout page and click the lightning icon on its row (Page Events). The page events canvas opens with the Funnel Entry Point.

The pages list is filtered to Checkout and the Page Events icon on the Checkout row opens the page events canvas
Page events run each time the page loads, before the buyer sees it.

3Add a Set Checkout Bumps node

Drag from the entry point's output pin and release on an empty part of the canvas. In Create New Node, search for bump and click Set Checkout Bumps. The node arrives already connected to the entry point.

A wire is dragged from the Funnel Entry Point's output pin; in Create New Node the search for bump finds Set Checkout Bumps, which lands on the canvas already connected
Set Checkout Bumps is only offered on pages marked as checkout pages.

4Pick the bump

On the node, click Add bump. Choose your product under Product: the list shows only Bump products, and Title and Price fill in from it. Write the one-line pitch in Description, optionally an Added message, and click Save Bump.

Add bump opens Set Checkout Bump; the product Vitality Travel Pack is picked, the title and price 17 fill in, the description and the added message are typed and the bump is saved on the node
The price always comes from the product (the field is read-only), so change it on the product. Add bump again to offer a second one.

5Publish

Click Publish. The confirmation Page Events Saved appears and the bump is live on the checkout.

Publish is clicked and the confirmation Page Events Saved appears above the canvas
Until you publish, the live checkout keeps its previous page events.

6Check it on the live checkout

Open the checkout for your main product. The bump shows as a tick box with its title, price and description. Tick it: an Order bumps line appears and the total goes from $97.00 to $114.00.

The live checkout with the travel pack bump unticked at a total of $97.00; the box is ticked, an Order bumps line of $17.00 appears and the total becomes $114.00
The bump is added to the same order and paid in one payment with it. In the demo this is the brand's local checkout; on your account it is your checkout's domain.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the product as a Main product. Only products classified as Bump appear in the bump picker; change the Classification on the product.
  • Adding the node to a page that is not a checkout page. Set Checkout Bumps only appears on pages marked Is checkout page.
  • Typing a new price in the bump window. The price comes from the product. To test two prices, create two bump products.
  • Forgetting to publish. The live checkout only changes after Publish.
  • Offering something unrelated. A bump works when it completes the main purchase: a refill, a travel size, an accessory.

FAQ

Order bump FAQ

What is an order bump?

A small add-on offered on the checkout itself: a box the buyer ticks before paying. The add-on is added to the same order, so it takes no extra step and no second payment.

What is the difference between an order bump and an upsell?

The order bump sits on the checkout and is accepted before the payment. An upsell comes after the payment, on its own page, as a separate offer the buyer accepts with one click.

What does bump mean in sales?

It is short for order bump: an add-on that bumps up the value of the order the buyer is already placing.

Do order bumps increase average order value?

Every buyer who ticks the box adds the bump's price to that order, so they raise average order value when people take them. How many do depends on the offer: measure it on your own checkout.

How is the order bump charged?

In the same payment as the main order. The bump is added to the order as its own line, and the buyer pays the new total once.

Can I add more than one order bump?

Yes. Click Add bump again on the same Set Checkout Bumps node to offer another bump product.

Where does the bump's price come from?

From the product. The Price field in the bump window is read-only and shows the product's price; change the price on the product itself.

Can I A/B test an order bump?

Yes. Put a Split Test node in the checkout's page events with a Set Checkout Bumps node on each branch, each with a different bump product (for example the same pack at two prices).

Why doesn't my order bump show on the checkout?

Check four things: the product's Classification is Bump, the page is marked Is checkout page, the checkout has a spot for the bump, and you clicked Publish.

Can the bump be a digital product?

Yes. The Type of the product (Physical, Digital or Service) is separate from its Classification; any type can be a bump.

Do coupons apply to the order bump?

That is up to the coupon: each coupon has an Applies on bump offers setting that decides whether it can be used on bump products.

Where do I see order bump revenue?

Reports count bump revenue as part of the main order, in the Main Order Value, because the bump is bought on the main order form. It is not counted as an upsell.

Can I set up an order bump with the ef CLI?

Yes. Create the product with ef products create --classification bump, then add a Set Checkout Bumps node to the checkout's page events with ef pages events. The “Or send this tutorial to your AI” box above hands your agent these steps.
