Post-purchase upsell and downsell

After the checkout, offer one more product in one click. If the buyer says no, offer a smaller one. Here is the whole flow, step by step.

What you'll build

A post-purchase flow on the demo brand's funnel: after buying Vitality Complex, the buyer sees a one-click upsell for a 30-day Sleep Stack at $27. A "No thanks" sends them to a downsell, a 15-day pouch at $17. Every other path ends on the thank-you page.

New to upsells? Read the full guide first: what an upsell is, how it differs from a downsell and an order bump, and how the one-click charge works.

You need a funnel whose sales page leads to a checkout, an upsell page after the purchase (the demo funnel has Upsell — Sleep Stack after On Purchase), a downsell page, and products classified as Upsell and Downsell. The one-click charge reuses the buyer's card from the first order on Stripe and NMI; other payment methods send the buyer through a normal checkout for the upsell.

1Create the downsell product

In Settings › Products, click Create product. Enter the title and code, set Classification to Downsell, fill in the price and click Create product. The upsell product works the same way with Upsell (the demo's Sleep Stack — 30 day already is one).

Create product: Sleep Stack 15 day, code nw-sleep-15, Classification Downsell, price 17, retail price 24; the product appears in the list
The classification decides which purchase link the builder writes for the product.

2Link the upsell page's Yes and No

Open the upsell page in the builder and click the Yes button. Under Link Settings, pick the upsell product in Insert Product Purchase Link: the link becomes /ef-u?p=nw-sleep&b=363&c=iTYWNV6maA7L1fteOHDuHHRK&b=363&pg=16960. Then click the No link and pick Decline Link: it becomes /d?p=nw-sleep&b=363&pg=16960. Click Publish.

In the builder the Yes button gets the upsell product Sleep Stack 30 day from Insert Product Purchase Link, the No link gets Decline Link, and the page is published
Link the Yes button first: Decline Link takes its product from the first upsell link on the page.

3Link the downsell page

Open the downsell page. Give the Yes button the downsell product (the link becomes /ef-u?p=nw-sleep-15&b=363&c=iTYWNV6maA7L1fteOHDuHHRK&b=363&pg=16960). The downsell page has no upsell link for Decline Link to copy, so type the decline tag with the downsell's code in the No link's Link URL: /d?p=nw-sleep-15&b=363&pg=16960. Publish.

On the downsell page the Yes button gets Sleep Stack 15 day, the No link's URL is typed as UPSELL_DECLINE with the downsell code, and the page is published
Upsell and downsell links work the same way: both charge in one click when the payment method allows it.

4Add the On Decline branch

Open the funnel in Funnels › Builder. Drag from the upsell page's output pin and release on the canvas, search decline and pick On Decline. Drag from its pin again, pick Go to Page and select the downsell page.

In the funnel builder a wire from the upsell page adds On Decline, a wire from On Decline adds Go to Page, and the downsell page is picked
A page with no On Purchase or On Decline branch sends the buyer to the thank-you page, so the upsell's Yes and both downsell links end there.

5Publish the funnel

Click Publish. The confirmation The funnel was successfully updated appears and the new branch is live.

Publish is clicked and the confirmation The funnel was successfully updated appears
Test every path once with a real order: Yes, No then Yes on the downsell, and No twice.

6Watch the take rate

On the Dashboard, Upsell Sales counts accepted upsells and downsells, and Upsell Take % is their share of all sales. In the demo's last 7 days: 47 upsell and downsell sales out of 142 sales, 33.1%.

The analytics dashboard with Upsell Take % at 33.1% and Upsell Sales at 47 for the last 7 days of demo data
Demo data. Compare a new upsell against your own previous one on the same traffic, not against someone else's number.

Common mistakes

  • Picking Decline Link before the Yes link is set. Decline Link copies the product from the first upsell link on the page; without one it has no product.
  • Classifying the upsell as a Main product. The picker then writes a buy link, which starts a new checkout instead of a one-click charge.
  • Forgetting the On Decline branch. Without it, No thanks goes straight to the thank-you page and the downsell never shows.
  • Testing only the Yes path. Click through every path with a test order before sending traffic.
  • A downsell that is the same offer at a lower price. Make it a smaller version: fewer units, a trial size or a payment plan.

FAQ

Upsell and downsell FAQ

What is a one-click upsell?

An offer shown right after the purchase that the buyer accepts with one click, because the payment details from the first order are reused. In ElasticFunnels the Yes button carries an /ef-u?p=code&b=363&c=iTYWNV6maA7L1fteOHDuHHRK&b=363&pg=16960 link.

What is a downsell?

A smaller offer shown when the buyer declines the upsell: fewer units, a trial size or a payment plan. In the funnel it hangs off the upsell page's On Decline branch.

What is a post-purchase upsell?

An upsell shown after the payment, on its own page, before the thank-you page. The order bump is the pre-purchase version: a box on the checkout.

Does a one-click upsell need the card on file?

It needs the payment from the first order in the same session. On Stripe and NMI the upsell is charged to that card in one click. Other payment methods send the buyer through a normal checkout for the upsell instead.

What happens if the upsell card is declined?

The buyer continues on the decline path, the same as clicking No thanks: to the downsell, or to the thank-you page.

What happens after the buyer accepts the upsell?

They follow the upsell page's On Purchase branch. With no branch, they land on the thank-you page.

How many upsells should a funnel have?

Start with one upsell and one downsell. Add a step only when the last one raises revenue per buyer without raising refunds.

What are some good upselling examples?

More of the same result (a 90-day supply after a 30-day one), a product that completes the first one (a sleep formula after an energy one), or a faster or done-for-you version.

Is an order bump an upsell?

It is a small add-on, but it sits on the checkout and is paid with the order. See how to add an order bump.

Where do I see the upsell take rate?

On the Dashboard: Upsell Sales counts accepted upsells and downsells, and Upsell Take % is their share of all sales. The Upsell Take Rate by Main Product card breaks it down by main product.

Can I split test an upsell?

Yes. Put a Split Test node in front of two upsell pages in the funnel, the same way you A/B test a landing page.

Does it work on ClickBank or Digistore24?

Yes. The same [UPSELL] and decline links work on sales through a network, where the network charges the upsell.

Can I set up upsells and downsells with the ef CLI?

Yes. Create the products with ef products create, edit the pages' links as files, and add the On Decline branch to the funnel. The “Or send this tutorial to your AI” box above hands your agent these steps.
